The paper traces how Australia, with the legacy of WhiteAustralia, has emerged successfully and commercially within the Asian-Pacific region.Most recently, Australia under the leadership of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, has aspired tobecome 'the most Asia- literate country' in the west. This study identifies a number ofchallenges which Australia will have to face, given its history, identity, language policyand heritage.
