Description: Catalogue written in collaboration with the artist, of the exhibition Cripplewood/Kreupelhout exhibited at the Belgian Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2013. The work represents an exceptional collaboration between Visual Art and Creative Writing in the form of an interdisciplinary, intercultural, translingual and cross-artform dialogue between visual artist, writer and art critic on the theme and meaning of being ‘crippled’, historically, corporeally, metaphorically, environmentally. The form and content of this research is highly original and, in bringing together two leading contemporary creative practitioners for an exchange in areas of their shared interest and concern, makes a highly significant and visible research contribution, as they find ways to respond visually and in writing to ideas of disability, transgression, flaying and decay. It includes a new work of fiction by J M Coetzee, as well as a piece of writing and a series of letters from him as curator, in response to Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere’s project. The Venice Biennale for which the work was conceived, curated, written and first presented is a leading venue for contemporary art, where the work had considerable impact and has prompted extensive commentary and engaged critique.
