Item Open Access Advances in microstructured fiber technology(IEEE, 2005) Richardson, D.; Poletti, F.; Leong, J.; Feng, X.; Ebendorff-Heidepriem, H.; Finazzi, V.; Frampton, K.; Asimakis, S.; Moore, R.; Baggett, J.; Hayes, J.; Petrovich, M.; Tse, M.; Amezcua, R.; Price, J.; Broderick, N.; Petropoulos, P.; Monro, T.; IEEE/LEOS workshop on fibres and optical passive components (4th: 2005 : Palermo, Italy); RivaSanseverino, S.; Artiglia, M.We review our recent progress in the area of microstructured fiber design, fabrication and applications with particular emphasis on the control of both the nonlinearity and dispersion.Item Metadata only Generation of mid-IR continuum using tellurite microstructured fiber(IEEE, 2006) Delmonte, T.; Watson, M.; O'Driscoll, E.; Feng, X.; Monro, T.; Finazzi, V.; Petropoulos, P.; Price, J.; Baggett, J.; Loh, W.; Richardson, D.; Hand, D.; Conference on Laser and Electro-Optics (2006 : Long Beach, Calif.)We demonstrate the production of a well depleted mid-IR continuum with a spectral range between ~0.9 – 2.5 μm using a tellurite wagon wheel microstructured fiber and a pump source at 1.5 μm.Item Metadata only Improving bending losses in holey fibers(Optical Society of America, 2005) Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Hayes, J.; Finazzi, V.; Richardson, D.; Conference on Optical Fiber Communication (2005 : Anaheim, California)Preliminary work has shown that the bending losses of large-mode-area holey fibers can be improved by modifying the hole configuration (Mortensen et al. (2003)). For the first time, we accurately quantify the advantages of this technique.Item Metadata only Microstructured fibres for high power beam delivery applications(Institute of Electrical Engineers, 2005) O'Driscoll, E.; Watson, M.; Delmonte, T.; Petrovich, M.; Finazzi, V.; Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Richardson, D.; European Conference on Optical Communication (31st : 2005 : Glasgow, Scotland)We explore the potential offered by solid and air core microstructured fibres for high power applications and report the use of these fibre types in a pump delivery system for an optical parametric oscillator (OPO)Item Metadata only Mode area limits in practical single-mode fibers(CLEO/QELS, IEEE, 2005) Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Richardson, D.; Conference on Laser and Electro-Optics (2005 : Baltimore, Md.)The upper limits imposed by bend loss on practical mode size in single-mode holey and step-index fibers are identified for a range of wavelengths. Using these results we quantify the advantages offered by holey fibers.Item Metadata only PMD properties of spun silica holey fibers(IEEE, 2005) Fuochi, M.; Hayes, J.; Petrovich, M.; Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Richardson, D.; Conference on Optical Fiber Communication (2005 : Anaheim, California)We report the fabrication of a spun holey optical fiber. Measurements of differential group delay (DGD) confirm that significant reductions in polarization mode dispersion (PMD) can be readily achieved using this approach. © 2005 Optical Society of America.Item Metadata only Remote OPO Pumping with Photonic Fibres(on line, 2005) O'Driscoll, E.; Watson, M.; Delmonte, T.; Petrovich, M.; Finazzi, V.; Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Richardson, D.; Electro Magnetic Remote Sensing Defence Technology Centre Technical Conference (2nd : 2005 : Edinburgh, UK)In this paper we seek to assess the advantages offered by index guiding holey fibres and air-core photonic band-gap fibres for high power beam delivery applications with robust single-mode guidance. We explore the practical performance factors associated with each fibre type and consider how these may affect implementation and operation in real aerospace and defence systems. As an example of such a system, we report the use of a photonic crystal fibre as a pump delivery fibre in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO).Item Metadata only Square core jacketed air-clad fiber(IEEE, 2006) Hayes, J.; Baggett, J.; Monro, T.; Richardson, D.; Grunewald, P.; Allott, R.; Conference on Optical Fiber Communication (2006 : Anaheim, California)We report the fabrication of a highly multi-mode square core jacketed air-clad fiber with a top-hat near-field intensity profile. Using this fiber to deliver Q-switched pulses at 1 μm we have successfully produced square shaped ablation marks in indium tin oxide (ITO) without the use of complex beam shaping optics.
