Abstract: Treatment of 1,2-diols with diphenylphosphinoyl chloride in pyridine produces beta-chloroethyl phosphinates which react with complete control of stereochemistry to give epoxides and azido-alcohols, useful intermediates in cyclopropane synthesis.
