Abstract

This paper adds to the literature on expatriate management by studying social network theory and guanxi networking in China. Although extant literature highlights the importance of the area of social networks by expatriate managers, it lacks a comprehensive framework of expatriate social network building, especially in China. This article uses dimensions of social capital to explain expatriate social network, and identifies the antecedents and outcomes of social network building for expatriate managers in China. Using the social network theory, the article proposes a new framework for building and maintaining expatriate social networks in China.
