Three new triorganotin(IV) complexes, the trimethyl, tributyl and triphenyl derivatives of 5-(4-chlorophenylazo)salicylic acid, have been synthesised and characterised by 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR, IR and elemental analysis and the crystal structure of triphenyltin-5-(4-chlorophenylazo)salicylate is reported. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P2 <inf>1</inf>/n with a = 9.566(1) Å, b = 14.550(2)Å, c = 22.528(3)Å, β= 94.04(1), V= 3127.8(7) Å S, Z = 4 and D <inf>calc</inf> = 1.42 Mg.m -3. There is an encapsulated molecule of hexane incorporated in the structure. This complex adopts a monomeric distorted tetrahedral configuration with the ligand coordinated via a carboxylate oxygen.
