Abstract
Paternal postpartum depression (PPd) in new fathers has been under researched. A systematic review of the literature concerning new fathers and their experiences with anxiety and depression during the postpartum period was conducted. Outcomes of the review suggest that although fathers expressed overall satisfaction with their newborn, they also experienced symptoms of distress, anxiety and depression in relation to these added responsibilities as a father and provider for their family. Role confusion and gender specific factors of adjustment associated with the changes to lifestyle were also considered to contribute to a less positive experience in some men's transition to fatherhood. Postnatal depression (Pnd) experienced by a spouse was a significant risk factor for men developing the symptoms of PPd. There was a paucity of information on the role of the health professional especially the midwife in detecting PPd in new fathers. The review highlights that some new fathers found pregnancy and the postpartum experience to be overwhelming and stressful.
