Abstract
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease resulting from a progressive destruction of the insulin-secreting β-cells. There is no cure or preventive treatment for type 1 diabetes. However, increased vitamin D intake is currently considered as one of the most promising candidates for prevention. The biological mechanisms for a role of vitamin D in diabetes development are plausible and as reviewed in this chapter, evidence to support an association has been obtained from various lines of investigation.
