Abstract

In parent-education nurses use Learning Principles to help parents to learn. Parents transform information into knowledge they can use meaningfully. Yet, nurses’ Learning Principles used is poorly described in healthcare. Reviewed parent-education studies revealed hidden, disorganised descriptions of Learning Principles use. This thesis explored, in 3 action research cycles, how nurses used Learning Principles, parents’ learning experiences, identifying ways to communicate these Learning Principles to nurses/parents. Watching nurses help parents learn, showed that nurses used Learning Principles but, when interviewed they could not explain their use. In group discussions nurses ‘unlocked’ and describe Learning Principles used. A collaborative workshop enabled participants to determine, though cues, ways to communicate how Learning Principles are used. A parent/nurse resource was created.
