Abstract
The global prevalence of the gastric pathogen, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is estimated at around 50%. In Australia there have been no recent H. pylori prevalence studies or longitudinal studies of H. pylori incidence in the general population. This research investigated trends in H. pylori prevalence over time in Australia through: 1) a scoping review; and 2) analysis of diagnostic data. The scoping review found an apparent decrease in H. pylori prevalence in clinical populations over the past four decades, but no evidence of a decline in the general population. Further, a high prevalence was reported in vulnerable groups such as Indigenous, migrant and institutionalised populations. Analysis of diagnostic data of 287,137 individuals from 2000-2016 showed a nine-fold increase in the number of tests performed, and a decrease in H. pylori prevalence from 27.7% to 22.5%.
