Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the following topics: the idea that multilingualism is normal formost people in the world; How people’s language practices adapt and change when they come into contact with neighbouring or different speech communities (pidgins and creoles; lingua francas; urban andrural varieties); different kinds of language practices and languaging (code-switching, code-mixing and translanguaging); the effect of power on the ecological balance of languages (minoritisation of languages; language maintenance, shift, loss, death; language revival and revitalisation; language as aresource and linguistic citizenship)
