Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) has been expected as a promising method to addressing next 5G wireless challenges by merging RAN and cloud networking. The usage of coordinated transmission in conjunction with the C-RAN architecture is anticipated to give much-needed respite in dealing with the exponential rise in data traffic owing to mitigating interference through the increase in signal power received from coordination. In this paper, the impact of coordinated transmission on networks throughput together with the spectrum and energy efficiency of C-RAN architecture for downlink transmission is investigated. Numerical results based on simulation settings validate the superiority of the proposed C-RAN architecture in terms of both spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency.
