Abstract
Undertaking the strategic planning process is arguably the number one role of the board within any organisation. Leading the strategic planning process is often done in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and other senior staff but as the board’s role is primarily concerned with the long-term or‘strategic’ outlook for an organisation, ultimate responsibility must inevitably rest with these individuals. In its simplest terms, a strategic plan is a written document that outlines detailed information about an organisation and provides some direction for how the organisation may evolve in the future. It summarises the practical elements of the planning process and condenses this information into a digestible format to help provide the aforementioned direction for the organisation and indeed what steps must be taken to achieve progress towards the stated direction
