Abstract

Cancer patients commonly have other age-related chronic conditions known as comorbidities. Comorbidities can complicate the management of cancer patients and impact on their survival. However, finding the best method to measure and adjust for comorbidity when comparing cancer outcomes between groups is challenging. Internationally developed and commonly used tools have not been validated for use in an Australian cancer population. This thesis aims to find the best method to use by comparing the mortality predictive accuracy of Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), ECI, NCI and C3. Results showed that internationally developed indices are still adequate for measuring comorbidity and predicting mortality in a South Australian cancer population and have the advantage of international consistency in methodology.
