dc.description.abstractThis paper presents case study of the upgrade project of the search engine in National Spatial Information Management System (NSIMS) using rapid prototype technique. It is a notable success story describing successful project implementation for Defence using an agile software development method not commonly seen in Defence projects. To illustrate the nature of the software project the architecture of the NSIMS has been described, as well as existing search engine capabilities and limitations, which have to be addressed in the upgrade project. Corresponding analysis of search engine improvement options and pragmatic performance criteria selection are presented together with following trade-off analysis results. The paper also presents and discusses technical details of the search engine prototype implementation characteristics, rationale for selection of an agile prototyping development, project schedule and other resources used. In conclusion the new search engine prototype achieved performance parameters were compared against the old search engine showing the significant improvement. We believe that this case study provides interesting insights and observations how the agile software method has been used in Defence IT project. It is likely that some of suggested solutions and practices can be applied in similar conditions for similar applications in other projects.
