Abstract

Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation that requires occupational tasks to be carried out in hazardous conditions. There are high rates of musculoskeletal injuries (sprain and strain injuries) reported among Australian Firefighters. Research investigating the occupational activities and organisational burdens associated with musculoskeletal injuries in firefighters are rare. This research project examined the organisational costs associated with workers’ compensation claims for traumatic musculoskeletal injuries in South Australian Metropolitan firefighters. A secondary analysis examined the influence of aging on claim costs and workdays lost. In a separate analysis, the occupational activities most frequently associated with traumatic musculoskeletal injuries were investigated.
