Abstract
Getting 8 hours of sleep a night is crucial to human health and well-being. Even a small reduction in sleep duration can lead to negative health effects. Sleeping less than six and a half hours (390 minutes) per night or engaging in long term shift work can lead to a variety of negative short and long-term physiological and psychological health consequences including: endocrine and metabolic effects(such as loss of appetite or type 2 diabetes); gastrointestinal issues; cardiovascular effects (an increased heart rate and blood pressure); a reduction in the function of the immune system; increased cancer risk; potential damage to women’s reproductive function; obesity; fatigue; hypertension; cognitive impairment(deterioration of performance, attention and motivation; diminishment of mental concentration and intellectual capacity and increase of the likelihood of accidents at work and during driving); mental health complications; and a reduction in life expectancy.
