Abstract
This paper explores how immersive technologies might play a role the public experience of the crafted artifact in a museum exhibition. Drawing on a contextual literature review b and of best practice exemplars. , it discusses the main challenges concerning the immersive exhibition innovation from practical, cognitive and ontological perspectives. The paper also unpacks the potential role immersive technologies can play in a visitors’ engagement in the contemporary crafts exhibitions and investigates how immersive technologies may enhance a visitors’ empiric experience of the crafted object in the museum by utilising contemporary digital immersive technologies.his paper documents an analysis of research into the relationship between an immersive digital experience of craft objects in a museum exhibition in comparison with an unmediated encounter describing advantages and disadvantages of both paradigms for both the audience and the curator. Before going on to consider how a combination of 1st hand empiric encounters and immersive digital technologies might enhance the overall vistor experience in terms of practicality, cognition and ontology.
