Abstract

This paper summarises the complex issues surrounding the abuse of older people, and considerations for prevention and service delivery. The first section discusses the definitions and types of abuse of older people, its estimated prevalence, and factors of gender, ageing, mental capacity, culture, and rurality. Most abuse is perpetrated by close family members, and the literature highlights the issue of power and control. The second section considers approaches and principles in the prevention of abuse, including the victim advocacy approach, the public health model, the restorative justice model, and the domestic violence prevention model.
