Stakeholders play a significant role in projects. Generally, internal stakeholders will demonstrate support for a given project, while external stakeholders could be in favour, against or indifferent to the project. Noticeably, the adverse influence of external stakeholders on construction projects has been reported recently; hence there is a present need for a proper understanding of what they can do to affect construction projects and how managers should respond to their actions properly. This doctoral project was conducted in a qualitative manner, including two sequential stages. In the first stage, a new theoretical framework of stakeholder influence strategies was proposed and applied; the framework includes three generic categories: direct, lobbying and bolstering. The second stage follows a grounded theory approach to establish a model of strategic responses to stakeholders’ direct strategies, including 25 interviews with construction participants in Vietnam.
