Abstract

We have previously described the design and operation of a simple infra-red cloud detector intended for monitoring clouds at remote astrophysical observatories. If such a detector is to automatically scan and monitor the whole sky over long periods of time, it is necessary to have a method for reliably determining the distinction between a cloud signal and the clear sky over a range of meteorological conditions and zenith angles. We have accumulated data over a number of years of monitoring to enable a cloud discrimination method to be developed and good cloud discrimination to be reliably achieved. This paper describes the technique.
