The COSPAS-SARSAT program is a satellite system devised to provide precise and reliable distress alert and location information to assist search and rescue (SAR) operations worldwide. The current system relies on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and geostationary (GEO) constellations and is in the process of being superseded by Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) constellations. A new transmit waveform for second-generation beacons is currently under development to ensure better system performance. This transmit waveform is based on a spread spectrum signal and occupies the whole bandwidth designated for COSPAS-SARSAT program. In this paper, we study the performance of the second-generation waveform at the receiver. This performance evaluation is based on the probabilities of acquisition error, message detection error and correct message detection that are analysed by simulations. We also present results of experimental trials for second generation waveform. Our results indicate that reliable burst acquisition is achievable by using the balanced generalised post detection integration (B-GPDI) method for frame synchronisation. However, further improvement in computational complexity of the acquisition method is desirable for real-time processing of many simultaneous signals.
