Controlled hydrolysis of [(ClCH₂CO₂)₃Sn(CH₂)₃Sn(O₂CCH₂Cl) ₃]n 1 resulted in the hitherto unknown “Sn₁₂” cluster {[Sn(CH₂)₃Sn] ₆ (ClCH₂CO₂)₁₄ (OH) ₂O₁₀} 3 with trimethylene “handles”: compound 3 has all twelve tin atoms nearly coplanar, in stark contrast to previously described “Sn₁₂” clusters which have a spherical football structure.en
