Abstract

Satellite communication (SatCom) has the unique capability of providing coverage over large geographical areas, and is a cost effective solution to provide telecommunication services in remote (isolated) areas where a terrestrial telecommunication network is prohibitively expensive to deploy. Previously, SatCom systems were mainly used for broadcasting, navigation and remote sensing. Currently, SatCom systems also provide high throughput satellite (HTS) communications and are integrating with next generation mobile cellular systems (e.g. 5G technology) to ensure ubiquitous global coverage. The aim of this thesis is to investigate and analyse the performance of two most potent architectures of next generation HTS communication systems (i) multi-beam SatCom architecture and (ii) integrated land mobile satellite (LMS)-terrestrial cooperative architecture.
