Abstract
This thesis looks at local memory practices in the years (1999-2016) prior to Colombia’s 2016 Peace Agreement. Drawing on three case studies of local Colombian organisations and using documentary research and semi-structured interviews, this thesis demonstrates that local memory initiatives enabled grassroots voices to permeate at the national level amidst Colombia’s ongoing conflict. This took place gradually and involved moving private protests into the public sphere; gaining attention through innovative and public memory initiatives; and providing politically useful and compelling narratives to leading Colombian actors through such initiatives. This thesis details how through diverse memory practices, local groups informed government reports on the conflict in their respective local contexts, potentially shaping how issues of recovery, reconciliation, and local agency were framed.
