Abstract

This paper examines recent developments in the provision of student housing and considers their impact on local communities and patterns of urban regeneration. It offers an assessment of traditional models of student housing, and shows how and why universities are increasingly turning to collaborative arrangements with private developers. The consequences of this change for universities, students and local communities are considered. It is argued that the new student housing developments must conform to certain specific criteria if they are to assist in the processes of urban regeneration as well as serve the interest of the universities.
