Abstract

This article examines the critical factors that may either facilitate or frustrate contributions made through international volunteering program to capacity development. In doing so, it focuses on the personal, organisational and environmental contexts. While these three factors can support the ability of an international volunteer program to contribute to the capacity development of a host organisation, they can also present significant barriers to success. The findings of this article have implications for practitioners and academics alike in the ways in which volunteerism is approached and framed in discourses around international development. This article presents the preliminary findings of Australian Red Cross research carried out through the Australian Red Cross delivery of the Australian Volunteers for International Development program.
