Abstract
In this paper a tree-search multiuser detector is studied for bit-synchronous CDMA systems over a flat fading Rayleigh channel. A series of simulations have been conducted with binary random spreading sequences of length 31. The simulation results show that the M-algorithm detector based on a pre-detection whitening filter significantly outperforms similar detectors based on the matched filter statistic only. Also the results show that the M-algorithm detector effectively eliminates the error floor usually encountered for CDMA systems in a fading channel. Based on the simulations it is clear that a low complexity M-algorithm detector can achieve near optimum performance (i.e., approaching the single-user bound). An important conclusion then follows directly that a simple near optimum multiuser detector can significantly increase the capacity of DS/SSMA systems as compared to the conventional single-user detector.
