Abstract

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the contemporary landscape for culturally responsive pedagogies, the rise of global crises, and the increasing strength globally of anti-democratic forces. The chapter highlights the global intensification of educational inequality which is also marked by growing socio-cultural and linguistic diversity of school communities. The chapter describes the rapid demographic shift of students that has placed pressure on schooling policy and practices to enable success of diverse groups. In this chapter, this is called superdiversity education. These inequities during the COVID pandemic exposed broader new societal discourses becoming the new hegemony in schools. Furthermore, the chapter defines culturally responsive pedagogies and describes the conceptual, ethical, and political frameworks that underpin the book. Finally, this chapter presents an overview of the sections and contributing chapters regarding global implications for schooling in a diverse world post COVID-19 pandemic.
