Abstract

This thesis outlines development, implementation, and evaluation of a Self-Determination Theory-informed physical activity intervention for community- and residential-based aged care workers. The development of the intervention used a participatory approach, guided by the Intervention Mapping framework, evidence-based behaviour change strategies, and information gathered from implementing staff (management) and potential end-users within the organisation. A pre-intervention qualitative study investigating barriers and enablers to volitional physical activity in the target population was undertaken as a part of the needs assessment stage of the program development. A systematic review to investigate the efficacy of previous theory-informed workplace physical activity interventions compared to non-theory informed interventions was undertaken concurrently with the pilot trial.
