Abstract

In this exhibition, research has been undertaken within the practice of painting to investigate universal aspects of colour and visual perception using words and systems based on chance as means of composition. The title of the exhibition 'Flatland' was derived from Edwin A. Abbott's Victorian era science fiction novel in which two dimensional geometric creatures colour their edges in order to distinguish themselves from one another. In this world three dimensional beings are only seen in cross-section so for example a sphere would be perceived as a circle or hole.
