Abstract
Multi-user scheme from RF systems cannot be directly applied to VLC systems due to the different characteristics between the two technologies. First, transmitted signals in VLC must be non-negative real but signals in RF can be complex. Second, the average transmitted power in VLC must meet the illumination requirements while we are only interested in minimizing the transmitted power in RF. The schemes suitable to RF systems need some modifications before they can be applied in VLC systems. In this thesis, we propose several system designs to achieve efficient channel estimation and information broadcast for VLC multi-user. We categorize the multi-user systems into three types based on the requirement on the transmitter LEDs: 1) Decentralized asynchronous systems (DAS), 2) Decentralized synchronous systems (DSS),and 3) Centralized synchronous systems (CSS).
