Abstract
Using a participatory case study design, the teacher-researcher investigated six Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Year 2 students in a regional school in NT of Australia, identifying challenges Aboriginal students faced in reading and factors influencing their reading. The data were collected via the standardized reading tests formally adopted in the current system, the specially designed tests and the narratives extracted from individual interviews. The study showed that Aboriginal students’ reading was shaped by their culture and they struggled in three areas: decoding, using necessary comprehension skills to extract underlying meaning, and applying appropriate world knowledge. Recommendations are offered to increase parental participation, improve school attendance, provide targeted teacher training, modify assessment system and develop partnerships with local Aboriginal communities.
