Abstract

The thesis investigates the use of cation exchange reaction towards the preparation of functional nanoparticles with application in cancer diagnosis and radiotherapy. The unique properties of nanomaterials, which allow for complex engineering, have been exploited towards the development of radiolabelled nanoscale agents (probes) for cancer nuclear imaging and therapy. The main objective was increasing the stability of the radioactive elements compared to existing approaches as well as the amount of radioactivity that can be incorporated within the functional probes towards improving their performance. The versatility and potential of cation exchange reactions applied to nanomaterials was demonstrated. This research provides a solid foundation for clinically translatable routes aimed at producing nanoprobes in the field of nuclear medicine and nuclear oncology.
