Abstract
The building of the Laboral City of Culture is located in the city of Gijon and which built in the 1950s. The tower of this building is reminiscent of the famous Giralda tower in Seville and the Lighthouse in Alexandria. The tower has square shape 12 x 12 m and a height of 130 m. Operational modal analysis (OMA) was applied to the tower in order to study its dynamic behaviour.
The ambient response of the tower was measured in 4 levels using piezoelectric accelerometers with a sensitivity of 10 V/g. Bending and torsional modes were identified in frequency range 0-6 Hz using the frequency domain decomposition and the stochastic subspaces identification methods. The experimental modal parameters were used to calibrate a finite element model assembled in ABAQUS. The updated FEM model leads to a satisfactory correlation between the experimental and the numerical modal parameters.
