Abstract
The article presents the future of sustainable urban transport system in relation to the tram line extension project in Adelaide‟s CBD (South Australia). Specifically, the extension plan of tram services to the East End of Adelaide‟s city is fleshed out in terms of its potential contributions to create a more balanced market share of transportation sector. More importantly, the extension plan also helps to mitigate transport emissions especially carbon emissions (CO2) from automobile vehicles, thereby promoting Adelaide as the world first Carbon Neutral City. Firstly, the projection of modal shift from private cars to new tram services was clearly justified by using analytical software (i.e. SPSS) with input data collected from intercept surveys with different groups of participants along the proposed tram route (North Terrace, Adelaide). Furthermore, the reduction of CO2 as a consequence of the modal shift was also revealed to determine the future contributions of the tramline extension project
