Abstract
This thesis provides a contribution to knowledge in its exploration and analysis of the management practices of theatres in Vietnam in response to doi moi, a multi-faceted reform process that set out to change the country from a subsidised economy to a market economy. It addresses the inter-relatedness and interplay of organisational management practices of four different theatres in the settings of the two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Using a conceptual framework of ‘systems thinking’ in combination with the paradigm of the ‘organisation–environment relationship’, the research provides an understanding of these reforms in the context of the theatres, their adjustment to their external environment, their effect on their environment and the impact of the reforms on the Vietnamese theatrical system in general.
