Abstract
My research aims to develop new thin-walled composite structural elements comprising cold-formed steel (CFS) open sections and thin layers of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) with higher flexural, shear and axial compressive capacities and enhanced buckling behaviours compared to the bare CFS elements. The innovative composite CFS/ECC sections benefit from the lightweight nature and high strength of CFS sections and high tensile strain of ECC mixtures. The ECC thin layers can significantly limit the buckling failure modes associated with the bare CFS elements and achieve their plastic capacities under different loadings. CFS/ECC composite members can be manufactured as precast elements and assembled on-site and can potentially be used as a retrofitting technique for corroded steel structural elements.
