Abstract

This thesis explores areas of uncertainty relevant to providing optimised care for patients with low back pain. In particular, it examines the prognostic performance of low back pain screening instruments and their potential value in secondary care, and the role of carefully delivered information in providing patients with effective reassurance. These concerns are investigated through a systematic review of the literature, a longitudinal cohort study, an online investigation and a pilot clinical trial.
