Abstract

Independent beer brewing has risen to public prominence in Australia with the number of breweries in Australia now greater than in the early twentieth century. This re-emergence of small-scale brewing organisations occurred in an industry previously marked by consolidation, a focus on scale and efficiency, and declining demand for beer. Utilising a mixed methods approach, this study investigated the emergence and growth of the independent beer brewing sector in Australia through the theoretical lenses of organisational ecology and functions of innovation systems. The research found the new population benefitted from a legitimation effect with organisations established through multiple, diverse channels. This study offers an explanation for the reasons that led to the proliferation of new specialty organisations and their growth trajectory.
