Abstract
Athlete mental health has increasingly drawn the attention of researchers and sporting organisations due to the significant stressors high-performing athletes often face. This thesis explored factors that contribute to flourishing in Australian athletes. Qualitative interviews with 15 athletes revealed four key themes: finding and maintaining holistic balance; the role of the self; being surrounded by supportive relationships; and being immersed in a positive sport environment. A cross-sectional online survey of 114 athletes identified four significant factors linked to flourishing: perceived informational support in sport; emotional intelligence; low interference of personal life with sport; and mutual enhancement between sport and personal life. These findings provide valuable guidance for sport organisations aiming to foster holistic athlete development beyond performance.
