Abstract

Significant research has been conducted on heat transfer enhancement with phase change materials (PCMs) in thermal energy storage systems. Heat transfer enhancement techniques such as using conductors like graphite, carbon fiber, carbon brushes and multitubes within PCM have been proven to be effective. Other technique such as having fins embedded on tubes has been very popular due to its simplicity and low cost. A new concept of a heat transfer enhancement technique of a tube-in-tank phase change thermal energy storage system has been investigated in this paper. This technique is used to analyse the improvement in the effectiveness of the melting process. It was found that the experiments with dynamic melting were more effective than the experiments without dynamic melting. The time taken for the phase change process was also found to be shorter when dynamic melting was activated. Dynamic melting is an effective technique for enhancing heat transfer.
