Abstract

The Prominent Hill mine employs both conventional and IsaMill grinding and flotation to recover the copper, gold and silver values from the ore. The ore is ground to 80% passing 125 μm prior to rougher flotation. The rougher concentrate is reground further to 80% passing 20 μm in an IsaMill with the aim to liberate the valuable Cu sulphides from gangue minerals, including the U-bearing minerals. The reground rougher concentrate is then subjected to Jameson Cell flotation with the Jameson Cell concentrate directed to the final concentrate. The Jameson Cell tail receives three stages of mechanical cleaning in order to suppress flotation of gangue minerals. The Cleaner Circuit concentrate is also directed to the final concentrate. Uranium, however, still tends to accumulate in the final copper concentrate from these two streams, providing a whole new challenge for the Prominent Hill mine. The question this research tried to answer was, “what are the U recovery mechanisms at Prominent Hill?”
