dc.description.abstractThe name of a site a kilometre or so north of McLaren Vale town was recorded at first contact as “Cow-e-o-lon-ga” and “Cowie-orlunga”. This name is clearly Kaurna, as it uses the standard Kaurna Locative ngga ‘at’, and follows the rules for its use. But its spelling and meaning are uncertain. The compound root word could be any combination of a first morpheme kauwi ‘water’ OR kauwa ‘steep [place], cliff’, with a second morpheme yarla ‘calf of the leg’ OR yurlu ‘face, forehead’.en
