Abstract

This research sits in historically informed performance practice of opera. It explores the seminal monody Lamento d'Arianna (originally from the opera L'Arianna (music lost), Mantua 1608) by C. Monteverdi using research-based performance. It is Part 2 of the Arianna Project. This is the first live performance that presents elements of stile rappresentativo based on historical research into acting techniques in early opera in a performative mode. The research juxtaposes the modern performance canon (concert style) with historically informed stile rappresentativo (theatrical style). Considerably, it offers a unique re-construction of the lament scene in L'Arianna using O. Rinuccini's extant libretto, English translations, pre-recorded voices and modern sound design.
