Abstract
The need to invest in the first year experience and foster a sense of belonging within the student body is well supported in the literature. Developing an institutional understanding of the specific context for first year cohorts can assist in identifying current practices that assist and those that create barriers. Employing and training 2nd year students to undertake the data collection of 1st year students' sense of belonging and connectedness provided a novel and unique way to engage students and provide an effective data collection process. The 2nd Year students also gained from the process in terms of personal growth, confidence as well as research knowledge and skill development. The process also enhanced their personal sense of connectedness with the institution.
