Abstract

The Department of Defence, like all government funded bodies, is open to scruitiny and is a favourite with news reporters for the daily drama and issues that surround it. This is apparent online, on television, on radio and in newspapers, where headlines alert readers to the latest issue, problem or scandal to be found in the Department of Defence or with Australia's Defence personnel. This, however, is not new; only the manner of presentation is now changed. From the days of the Vietnam War, the presentation of news has been of a largely negative complexion, leading to a further hostility in terms of public perception.
