Abstract

Non-invasive clinical analysis of drug distribution and diffusion is a major goal in the area of percutaneous drug delivery. The plethora of fluorescent probes available, in conjunction with advanced microscopy techniques, has resulted in visual analysis of cutaneous applied compounds becoming an established technique within animal models. Furthermore, downstream computational image analysis extends the confocal microscopy approach from a qualitative visual technique to a semi-quantitative and quantitative analytical method resulting in information on drug trafficking, concentration and diffusivity within tissues. In relation to enhanced drug delivery, by maintaining the same imaging parameters between samples, direct comparisons can be made between different delivery techniques, clearly distinguishing one from the other.
