Abstract

The thesis explores skill discounting (SD) among migrants in Australia, where their qualifications and experience are undervalued, limiting job opportunities. Through four distinct studies using data from the Continuous Survey of Australia’s Migrants and interviews, the study found that demographic factors influence SD, with male, younger, longer-resident, and highly qualified migrants more likely to experience it. Retail, wholesale, transport, admin support, public administration, and real estate emerged as refuge industries for skill-discounted migrants. The research also showed that having local qualifications does not always reduce SD. Further, it revealed three employment pathways for skill-discounted migrants: desired, deviated, and distaste. The study broadens our understanding of the phenomenon of SD and offers insights for policies supporting better labour market integration.
