Abstract
This chapter discusses a range of theoretical perspectives around leisure and how each impacts on assessment and intervention in occupational therapy. Though traditionally conceived of as discrete activites or non-work time, the focus here is instead placed on leisure as a subjective experience, a perspective capable of acknowledging the dynamic nature of leisure in the complex lives of people. The significance of leisure experiences is discussed, justifying the call for more emphasis to be placed on this important aspect of people's lives. A range of possible assessment tools is provided, preliminary stage in a process aimed at rich and detailed analysis of the individual leisure experiences of people and groups. Such depth of analysis ensures that new or modified occupations retain the key determinants of the individual's idiosyncratic leisure experience.
